Diversity Week’s final event, “Queer Transgender Identities”, shed light on the common misconceptions of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender identities and gave Cal State Long Beach students a better understanding of what those terms mean.
According to Jennifer Reed, assistant professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, the idea of what gender means is becoming more complex. Since new terms such as queer, transgender and bisexual have emerged in society over the last 20 years.

Yesterday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters that he is optimistic about the passage this year of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA, which bans discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
With the House Committee on Education and Labor poised to consider the bill, a group called the Traditional Values Coalition, which bills itself as “the largest non-denominational, grassroots church lobby in America,” sent out a press release warning of the consequences of passage.

(CNN) — Rebecca Avery always felt different, even as a child. It wasn’t until the age of 13 that she would even hear the word that explained why she felt out of place — she was transgender.
It would take another 14 years and a new job before she started her transition from male to female.
Avery, 30, works as a graphic designer in Waukegan, Illinois. And even though she has worked in the publishing and design field for 10 years, only the past four have been under her current name and identity.

Georgina Beyer – the first transsexual MP and mayor in the world – has taken up a job selling jewellery in Masterton.
Ms Beyer, 52, sported the crisp and corporate black suit of a Michael Hill sales assistant in her first week in the job and said her return to the nine-to-five working world was “a step back to being normal, back to the coal-face, as it were”.
However, she is not letting the precious gems bedazzle her and is also eyeing a bid for the Masterton mayoral chains, depending on feedback and support for her bid.

A year after speaking to the media about being mistreated by police, Antonia Lara is facing life on the streets.
Last March, Lara, a 27-year-old pre-op transgender woman, shared a Twins Falls, Idaho county prison cell for about a week with Majid Kolestani, a 42-year-old transsexual Iranian refugee accused of murder. Lara was facing a charge of providing false information to police.
After her incarceration, Lara turned to the city’s paper to complain about their mistreatment at the hands of prison guards.
